Community invited to find out about upcoming work at Cellarhead substation
Residents living near Cellarhead substation close to the villages of Wetley Rocks and Bagnall are invited to meet members of National Grid’s team to find out more about a small extension that will be constructed to the north of the site.
National Grid owns and maintains the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales, transporting electricity through its network to the local distribution system so it reaches homes and businesses.
In early summer 2025, National Grid will begin constructing the extension on land that it owns, while also carrying out maintenance to existing equipment on site. This will help to reinforce the network and enable future new renewable energy connections to facilitate The Great Grid Upgrade, supporting the UK’s drive to net zero. The work is expected to be completed in 2027.
Ahead of the construction work starting, National Grid is holding a public drop-in event for the local community that will provide further details about the project.
This will be taking place between 4.00pm-8.00pm on Wednesday 21 May 2025 at Wetley Rocks Village Hall (Mill Lane, Wetley Rocks, Stoke on Trent, ST9 0BN).
At the event the project team will be available to speak about the plans and answer any questions about the construction process and timescales, as well as how construction and site traffic will be managed during the works.
Liam Fletcher, EPC Project Manager at National Grid, said:
The work at Cellarhead forms part of essential long-term plans to upgrade the substation and help facilitate connections for future renewable energy projects. As a regulated business, we have a legal obligation to connect customers to our network when these connections are requested.
People are welcome to drop in at any point during the session we’ve arranged on 21st May, and we’d encourage anyone living locally to come along to find out more about the construction programme and ask team members any questions that they have.
We’ll also have information on our Community Grant Programme which will be running throughout construction and offers small grants of up to £20,000 to community groups and charities in the area near our work.
More information about the project can be found on National Grid’s website: nationalgrid.com/cellarhead
